Sony has bolstered its suite of middleware tools available to PlayStation 5 developers with the addition of Denuvo’s anti-cheat technology. As a press release explains, the software is designed to bring “fairness and fun back to gaming”. It cites a survey which concluded that 77 per cent of players “express being repelled from a game due to cheating occurring, creating a tremendous risk [to the] monetisation of games”.
The statement continues: “Denuvo’s Anti-Cheat incorporates advanced technology to secure both online gameplay as well as securely reward offline progress. The technology helps game developers protect sensitive game logic or data, preventing cheaters from changing sensitive variables and ensuring its trustworthiness. A number of games incorporated Denuvo’s Anti-Cheat at launch of PS5 to ensure best experience for the gamers.”
So it sounds like this is already being used by a number of titles, although there’s no confirmation of which. “Cheating ruins video games for honest players,” said boss Reinhard Blaukovitsch, who has one helluva name. “This can lead to lower engagement, game traffic, and shrinking revenues for game publishers. We are really proud be able to help the world’s most talented developers to bring rich experiences for gamers on PS5.”
All in all, this sounds like good news to us. While there have been concerns about Denuvo’s DRM technology on PC, this is all about ensuring a level playing field for multiplayer gamers, and as long as it works as intended, then this sounds like a win-win for both players and publishers to us.

"creating a tremendous risk [to the] monetisation of games"
So it's not really the cheating that they're concerned about.
And the software can apparently have a large impact on the software which uses it. Some devs on PC use it only to bolster sales in the first few months, and patch it out later.
Bloodbourne Remastered confirmed to run at 12FPS on PS5 - bringing 'fun back to gaming'.
Denuvo massively hampers the performance of games, great move Jim and the Playstation team! /s
Get ready to see Denuvo implemented in games only to be removed after 3-6 months once the sales start drying up.
Either way this is a bad move from Playstation, guess the financial incentive was too good to turn down for Jimbo.
They already said that the tech was in several launch games without issue, so good knows why it's an excuse to lambast Jim Ryan again without any good reason. Besides the Denuvo tech on PC was to stop piracy which this isn't.
i just don't understand why denuvo is needed in a closed eco-system. like as far as i'm aware, it's just straight up not possible to cheat online like pc gamers can on a PS4 or PS5 system. so, in what way is denuvo gonna help ??
@Paranoimia the only reason they are implementing this invasive DRM is because they are protecting their monotising assets, it's nothing about the players or fairness Denuvo is nothing but a hindrance 😡😡
Oh come on, Denuvo’s dreadful and who’s going to be pirating games on PS5? This is just plain odd.
@buteramagz More games are getting cross play with PC so there's more chance for console players to experience cheaters.
@nessisonett Got nothing to do with piracy.
@AdamNovice Denuvo is primarily used to prevent the pirating of games. It has a terrible impact on performance, hence why devs patch it out after a few months. It’s a smash and grab approach, reduce the impact of piracy on initial sales in the short time. I’d assume this is their sister product but it uses the same underlying technology. This won’t go down well.
The irony is that it doesn't stop piracy on PC, but it severely hampers the experience, and it also turns the game into an online-only product, meaning it becomes as useless as a paperweight once the servers are shut down.
@AdamNovice right but how would denuvo on console help with cheating happening on pc ? honestly that makes no sense. if a console game has denuvo, then chances are that the pc release also has it & if the pc cheaters already bypassed denuvo anti-cheat, how would it then help console players placed with potential cheaters on pc ? as far i'm aware, denuvo is not some magic tool that can help stop cheating on a completely different platform from what the user is on.
Good, I don't like cheater, it's fine if it's single player game but not on online multiplayer.
Had a pretty good chuckle about halfway through the article 🤣
@buteramagz I don't know about the tech said but everyone should wait and see before everyone starts judging as always.
It's been on Ps4 for years and no one has noticed it, but of course it's a headline now so all the morons have to make a big deal out of it confusing it with its PC DRM counterpart. Its amazing how so much of the Playstation community are misinformed goons that twist everything negatively and just blame Jim Ryan.
people who asking why denuvo on PS5? the reason that they provide Anti-Cheat measures and nothing more. denuvo was on PS4 also.
@nessisonett Oh yes it won't go down well. It absolutely ruined the Ps4 didn't it?
I honestly can't say I've seen any cheating since the PS4 other than bug exploits which this and any cheat software won't mitigate so the 77 % must be coming from the pc space which as we all know is where the aimbots, wallhacks and file edits are.
I'd be curious to know if there's any such things on PS4 and ps5 due to the firmware locks bricking modded consoles from online on the console space.
Edit. May obviously be useful for crossplay titles.
Get with the times Sony, everyone uses Gamespy to stop cheating nowadays. It's the leader in anti cheating technology. I haven't seen someone /god in Quake online yet!
@mucc agree. The fact that most didn't know this was already on the PS4 too tells you a lot...
Fairness and Fun? Talk about misleading. All they care about is how much money theyll be making from BS micro transactions theyll be selling you. The cheats are probably getting in their way of making money.
@ButeraMagz
I think all denuvo did on pc was maybe stop the piracy for like 3 months at most but then the pc hackers bypass all of denuvo anyway so i dun see it being useful on ps5 unless theres a whole custom firmware hack i dont know about.
@ButeraMagz apart from the fact it is possible to cheat on consoles. Yes it may be less common than pc but if it wasn't possible why do games like siege which currently don't have crossplay, have a built in anticheat system and why can you report players for cheating...
All you have to do is turn off cross play with PC gamers and it should remain pretty fair. Filled with cheaters on that platform due to the ease of use.
Some sort of anti-cheating system is a must for games with cross play. It doesn't really matter if it is Denuvo or something else.
Denuvo the software that recently or shall I say a while back was released with Doom Eternal on PC and it wasn't included box and installs itself without the user been notified. Then it actually runs at kernel level of Windows 10 which can actually cause issues with your OS and brick it plus it's been noted that on some people's PCs it actually effected performance.
